Your Home. Your Family. Your Safety
Sorted

By 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, hallway, and level. PCA makes compliance simple with trusted technicians, quality alarms, transparent pricing, and service you can rely on.

By 2027, every Queensland home must

meet new smoke alarm laws

Queensland’s updated legislation requires all residential properties — including owner-occupied homes — to be fitted with interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and on each storey. When one alarm detects smoke, they all sound together — giving you and your family the best possible chance to escape safely.
These laws are already in place for new homes and rentals, and from 1 January 2027, they’ll apply to all existing homes too.

All alarms must be photoelectric (not ionisation).

They must be interconnected with each other.

They must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year lithium battery.

Installation must meet AS 3786:2014 standards.

What Homeowners Want to Know

Your Questions, Answered.

The law aims to reduce fatalities in house fires. Interconnected photoelectric alarms detect smoke faster and alert everyone in the home at once — giving you more time to escape.

If your alarms are more than 10 years old, not photoelectric, or not interconnected, your home likely does not comply. PCA can inspect and confirm compliance for you.

Yes — to comply, all alarms in the home need to be upgraded to interconnected photoelectric models that meet the 2027 standard.

Most homeowners can upgrade for around the same cost as a family dinner out. Pricing depends on the size of your home and number of bedrooms — ask us for a quick quote.

In most homes, installation is completed within 60–90 minutes with minimal disruption. Our technicians clean up and test all alarms before leaving.
